38ft Cuttyhunk ketch, beautifully crafted
A beautiful wooden sail boat, we’d lived aboard in central Wellington for 6 years for far cheaper than any apartment in the capital.
Why buy an apartment when you can buy a tiny house that floats and can move around the world freely under wind power!
It’s a 38′ cuttyhunk ketch (twin mast, which can both be folded down for navigating canals). An ironwood main structure (old felled Malaysian Chengal, so naturally rot resistant, for all trees of that age and time) and expert planking with no caulk needed. Surprisingly all very low maintenance.
Solid teak interior. Really high quality craftsmanship with many fine details.
Made in 1976 in Malaysia. ‘Alan Pape’ design. The original owner was a collector so they over spec’d the build. Our surveyor at the time of our purchase in 2016 guessed around 3 tonnes of extra ironwood was built into the structure.
Fits in a 14m berth due to the long bow sprit (but around only 11.6m along the waterline).
Fully fitted 230v NZ wiring installed in 2017 (after we’d been living aboard for a while, so sockets are everywhere they could be useful). The socket design and insulated cable runs were incorporated into the interior as if it was originally specked that way. Also updated 12v LED lighting added around the boat with brass fittings, hidden LED strips in cupboards, etc.
Blue ocean capable (has already sailed more than half way around the world).
Perkins 4-108 engine. Runs excellently.
Quality batteries (4x 6V batteries in the 12V house bank, and a new starter battery at the same time). Solar and wind turbine keep the batteries topped up and keep the fridge and 12v lights running, etc.
There’s a good array of sails for a range of conditions. These have been stored inside (on-shore) or wrapped on deck to help protect against UV damage.
Some of the rigging lines have been replaced, although some fresh ropes would be beneficial on-deck before going blue ocean sailing again.

Up to about 250ltr fresh water tanks built in aboard.
Loads of onboard storage in every nook and cranny, along with lots of easily accessible cupboards and storage locations.
New (2019) Electric toilet and large black water storage tank aboard.
New quality saloon cushions made in 2018
Custom hand stitched pocket spring mattress with memory foam topper for main bed in the bow for great comfort (reconfigured a quality $2,000 mattress).
Quite a few spare parts for things around the boat / engine / etc.
The usual bunch of the instruments and radios for sailing.
It’s small, but very well proportioned and laid out.
Officially up to 6 berths (although the current life-raft is for 4). The area below deck is effectively one semi-open-plan cabin area (with a seperate engine compartment under the helm, and a closed off toilet).
The boat can be sailed singlehanded, has auto-helm, etc.
It has been pretty comfortable for 2 people and a cat for over 6 years. Prior to that was lived aboard with a family of 4 for about 8 years.
